With so much information available on trends and the must-have looks of the season, organising a wedding can become a nightmare of ribbon matching and 35 different shades of white. With a few simple rules, Fleur McHarg guarantees an elegant look to your wedding, which will reflect your style without going overboard with endless gimmicks. Although Fleur had been behind the scenes at some of Melbournes most prestigious functions for many years, she is recognised for her all-white flowers at the entrance of Georges department store in Melbourne. Her flowers reflected the style of the store with simple elegance. This is also reflected in her sun-drenched flower shop in Toorak Road, Melbourne, where she now works. Veering from the mundane, Fleurs designs manage to stay fresh and individual, but at the same time adhere to her signature trademarks of being elegant and understated. She is an advocate of maintaining simplicity, and strongly advises her clients to steer away from trends. I always tell my brides to forget about whats in fashion, and to do something that in 50 years time, you can look back at your wedding and feel confident that you had good taste. she says. With a diverse array of functions and events under her belt from corporate functions to dinners for both Princess Anne and Princess Michael of Kent, Fleur has an aura of brisk efficiency and anything seems possible with her confident assurance that everything will be taken care of. She has created weddings from $200.00 dollar budgets to $20,000.00 and more, her capacity to take everything in her stride has earned her a great reputation both with clients and those in the industry. Often teamed together with caterers such as Epicure and Peter Rowland, Fleur has developed working relationships with both, which ensure that all facets are taken care of, complimenting each other down to the finest details. Her innovative flowers seem to go beyond fashion, but are by no means ordinary. At a recent wedding she was given license to do something different, and so instead of table numbers, the guest were assigned a particular green vegetable or fruit to help them find their seats. The guests were told they were on the asparagus table or the kiwi fruit table, which could be easily recognised by her ingenious table settings, over flowing with generous helpings of fresh fruit and vegetables (not to be eaten) Fleur has a formula for success, which she asks her clients to work with, keeping it as simple as possible, with a minimum of fuss. This means restricting the amount of colours used, trying to keep it to 2, so that each single flower will shine with its individual beauty, rather than getting lost amongst a riot of colour. Fleur has a hectic schedule, which is how she likes to work best, giving 100% concentration to each event in the week leading up to it. After her initial consultation with brides, where she likes to discuss the brides requirements and see the fabric being used for the wedding party, she will file the information until she can give it her full attention. Judging by the success she has had over the last few years, coupled with her remarkable enthusiasm, she stands out as a leading figure in Australian flower design. |
