Great Grandma's wedding ring

On July 10th 1999, my brother invited me out for his 21st birthday with a group of his friends. I wasn't really very keen to go, but he insisted. When we arrived at our destination my brother introduced me to everyone, and Chris stood out, I thought that he was really cute. Chris recalls me walking around the corner and says that he was also instantly attracted to me.

As the night progressed Chris and I found us separated from the group and deeply immersed in conversation. We talked and talked all night about absolutely everything.

By the end of the night we knew that we wanted to see each other again, and my brother was happy to see his sister with his best friend.

On July 10th 2001 it was our second year Anniversary, and we started the morning off with a McDonalds breakfast at a small lookout near our house. Chris then told me he was going to take me for a surprise. We drove into the city and went for a ride on the paddleboats down the River Torrens, we had so much fun laughing and talking, whilst eating our lunch and some chocolates.

After this we went for a drive and ended up at Waterfall Gully, a favourite spot for both of us, it's so tranquil and peaceful. We walked to the first waterfall and sat down and talked about how much we both loved each other. Then Chris got down on one knee and told me how he loved me, he wanted to be with me forever, and asked me if I would do him the honour of being his wife.

I cried and immediately said 'Yes, yes!' and we hugged and cuddled, and talked excitedly about our future together.

We then spent the next few weeks searching for the perfect engagement ring, which I eventually had custom made to match the design of my wedding ring, which had belonged to my Great-Grandmother.

Soon after our engagement we decided that we would like to get married in September 2002, because we wanted good weather for our honeymoon in Europe and good weather for the wedding. This gave us a little over 1 year to arrange our dream wedding, and we needed every bit of it!

We were married on September 14th 2002 at 2pm at St Laurences Church in North Adelaide. We had a full mass officiated by Fr Sean Smith, who was just wonderful, along with the church's organist and choir.

We had a candle lighting ceremony, with both sets of parents lighting their family candles at the beginning of the ceremony. And once we were married we each took a light from our family candle and together lit our own family candle.

I loved planning our wedding, and had all the support I needed from my husband, and our families. We had no problems with availabilities for our wedding date, it seemed like that date was meant to be for us.

A few months after choosing our wedding date we found that it was meant to be. My Mum told me that the date we had chosen was the date that my Great-Grandmother had passed away 35 years earlier. This is the same Great-Grandmother whose wedding ring I had been given. So it was 35 years to the day that the wedding ring came off of my Great-Grandmother's finger, and went on mine.

We had our reception at the Tea Tree Gully Golf Club. On our wedding night the venue looked so romantic, with our colour theme of pale pink, white and gold.

The room was dreamy with all the white linen, white chair covers and pale pink tulle bows with a rose in the middle of the bow, on the tables were tall 5-arm gold candelabras, holding white oil-filled candles.

The ambience of the candlelight and the views from the large windows overlooking the course, and its huge gum trees all lit up at night was spectacular, and everything that we had hoped and envisaged.

The food was fantastic - or so we heard! We barely ate a thing because we were so busy mingling and dancing with our family and friends. We both keep saying that we would love to go to a wedding there, and this time take full advantage of the food on offer!

The day of our wedding was perfect, 28 degrees, with a slight cool breeze, and not a cloud in the sky. I was not nervous at all, and in fact was so keen to get to the church, show off my dress, and see my handsome husband!

The speeches were a highlight. My Dad gave a wonderful speech about my life and how proud my family are of me. Chris gave a touching speech about his love for me, and my brother (our Best Man) gave the funniest speech ever heard and I was in pain from laughing so much! - As I think were our other guests.

Another highlight of our wedding was our Bridal dance. Chris and I went to dancing lessons before the wedding, and danced a Foxtrot with some steps from other dances like the Tango to 'Unchained Melody'. We had several of our guests in tears. We also performed some other dances (a Swing and a Rock 'n' Roll) during the night.

We would both love to re-live our wedding day, and would not change a single thing - it was truly the best day of our lives!

The day after our wedding we flew out for our dream Honeymoon. We started of in Singapore for 2 nights and then flew to London to join our Contiki tour. We travelled to Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Venice, Florence, Rome, Nice and Paris. It truly was the trip of a lifetime, and well worth all of our hard saving. It was our first ever real holiday together, one that we will cherish forever.
