Wedding Stories

Shane and I are childhood sweethearts and have been together since I was 14 years old and he was 15. We met at a high school party and were good friends for almost a year when he asked me to dance at a school dance. The rest is history!

It is often said by our family and friends that Shane and I are complete opposites but I think that is perhaps why we have stood the test of time. Shane is mad about restoring old cars with radical paint colours and very big engines. I enjoy reading, movies and music, although we both love motorsports. I work as a Librarian so I think the catch phrase "Opposites Attract" definitely applies to us!

Shane proposed to me on Valentines Day. It came as a total surprise. We were holidaying in Surfers Paradise and having dinner at one of our favourite restaurants when out of the blue Shane pulled out the most gorgeous engagement ring and popped the question. I hadn't seen this coming at all and was completely speechless but managed to utter a small yes as he put the ring on my finger. Then Shane told me he had already been to see my parents back home before we left for our holiday to ask their permission to marry their daughter. His confession started the tears pouring down my face. I don't think I'd ever been so happy!

At the time Shane proposed I was not only working full-time but also studying a university degree by correspondence. So we decided to wait until I had finished my degree before we got married. This worked really well as I didn't want studying to take away from the excitement of planning the wedding. This then gave us around 18 months to plan which was plenty of time.

I'll never forget the look on Shane's face as I walked down the aisle with my father. When we reached the altar he grabbed my hand and with tears in his eyes whispered emotionally in my ear, "I know my hand is really hot and sweaty but there's no way I'm letting you go".

Because of the drought in our area we had been experiencing very windy days and horrible dust storms but we were very lucky on our wedding day as it dawned perfect, although it became exceptionally hot in the afternoon.

As our 135 guests expected, the cars were a very big part of our wedding, and our most tense moment was when it looked like one of our cars was not going to be ready in time. Shane's own car was the bridal car (a magenta coloured HJ Holden with white interior), and the other two cars belonged to friends who had worked tirelessly to get them ready in time. In fact one of the cars didn't even have a motor until about 2am the night before our wedding!

It all worked out OK though, with the two bridesmaid cars being restored Toranas, one a vibrant purple and the other a bright blue. The bridesmaid dresses were a purple colour that shimmered with pink and blue highlights in the sunlight so the whole combination looked fantastic! The guests waiting at the church for me to arrive certainly heard us coming!

Our wedding day was absolutely perfect and I wouldn't change a thing. Even the breakdown of one of the cars out at the lake where we were having photos couldn't dampen our spirits. It was a sight to see my new husband and his two groomsmen under the hood of the car in their suits! We arrived at the reception a little late and very hot but that first glass of wine has never tasted so good!

Our bridal party was great, especially my bridesmaids who didn't complain once about the noisy, non air-conditioned cars that wreaked havoc on our hair!

I was fortunate enough to have a hairdresser as one of my bridesmaids! Rachel did my hair, her own, my sister's (the other bridesmaid) and my mum's all at mum's house on the day. She did a wonderful job and insisted I take it as a wedding gift from her.

The bomboniere were incredibly lovely, my sister did all the work! She hand painted 70 beautiful ceramic bottles in a colour that blended perfectly with the bridesmaid dresses. We tied ribbon and thankyou notes around the neck of the bottles and gave out one between two guests. It was so nice to give our guests something a little different made by someone so close to me.

Our MC was a friend and work colleague of Shane's and did a fabulous job, keeping the whole night relaxed, informal and fun, which was just how we wanted it. He is also a fantastic singer and surprised us all with a few wonderful impromptu songs accompanied by our DJ!

The reception was the first time we had really relaxed all day and all of our guests had a fantastic night with them saying it was the best wedding they'd ever been to. Shane and I stayed with our guests all night and partied until 2.30am. We didn't want to miss a thing!

As I had never been overseas and love the ocean, we decided to splurge and headed to Fiji for our honeymoon on the Monday following our wedding. We stayed at two resorts for a total of 11 nights and loved every second of it. I couldn't imagine a better honeymoon.
